Whooping Cough – Large Increase in Deaths Concerning

Infections of Whooping Cough are rising and if the disease continues to spread, more babies will die.

Whooping Cough typically affects babies. New born babies have the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccination and 8, 12 and 16 weeks as part of their childhood immunisations. Mothers can also protect their baby by having a vaccination during pregnancy. This is a very important vaccination.

There have been 1319 cases of Whooping Cough in March, up from 900 in February. Cases are expected to continue to rise. 5 babies have so far died this year.
